Individual and Career
National Board Certified Instructor, Mr. Greg Lakey was a student-athlete at the University of Southern California and Loyola Marymount University. He graduated from LMU with a Bachelors in Business Administration emphasizing in Computer Information Systems. Greg started his professional basketball career in Beirut, Lebanon and later played professionally in Jordan, Syria, Chile and Germany. Once his playing days were over he decided to pursue education as a way to provide the type of motivation and encouragement he wished he would have received from teachers in his youth.
Over the last 16 years he has taught Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry & created, implemented and received A-G accreditation for 2 courses he wrote the curriculum for:
Accelerated Integrated 9th grade Mathematics and Math 9. Mr. Lakey is a firm believer in “exploratory” curriculum that is hands-on, tangible and applicable.
He is currently a brand ambassador for the interactive geometric proof software “Canfigureit”. He used physics equipment to create and publish “Cars, Ramps, and Photogates: An Integrated Approach to Teaching Linear Equations”, used real time banking data to connect exponential equations and savings accounts, students hand built and ignited rockets to investigate the relationships between quadratics, physics, & trigonometry and he introduced statistics and the stock market to his classroom in the publication “Standard Deviation and the Stock Market”.
Family
Mr. Lakey is a devoted husband of 15 years. His wife, Mrs. Lakey, is a Human Resource professional at Cal State Dominguez Hills. His oldest son, Tahj, will be a Yale University class of 2021 graduate with a degree in Ethnicity, Race and Migration. Greg’s 12 year old son, Haidyn, is an honor roll student, great swimmer and an adept guitar player.
Lastly, his 9 year old daughter, Bryce, excels in reading, is also a great swimmer and is pretty adept at drumming. Financial literacy is a cornerstone belief for Mr. Lakey. His kids have active stock investment accounts, participated in real estate crowdfunding deals, and have invested in start up companies.
